Glossary

We recognize that language is always changing and shifting, and that people may use different words to describe themselves. When in doubt, we believe the most respectful approach is simple: listen to the words people use to identify themselves and follow their lead.

Use this glossary as a starting point for understanding common terms related to gender, sexuality, and gender-affirming care.

CULTURAL CONTEXT

Gender Beyond the Binary

The gender binary that has been normalized today is a colonial system, erasing many cultures' unique gender identities. For example, the term "Two-Spirit" is a modern term used by many Indigenous nations/tribes across Turtle Island (colonially known as North America) to encompass their varied words and beliefs around gender identity outside the colonial gender binary.

This list offers a small selection of culturally specific terms related to gender diversity. These identities, roles, and terms are not interchangeable, and may not align with Western categories such as transgender, non-binary, or third gender.

*This list is non-exhaustive and includes terms that may be outdated, contested, or derogatory depending on the context.
